Opening Day Season 2012
Our members enjoyed the beautiful "early spring" weather on Saturday, 27th August that marked the start of our 2012 Bowling Season. The offical opening was attended by VIPs, Councillor Amanda Stapledon, and Bowls Victoria VRAG representative, Judith Thorpe. After a light lunch, that included Shirley's famous soup, our new bar was offically opened by Amanda and the award of Super Veterans badges made to members John Bibby, Cyril Arlove, Des Conroy, Lou Welsh and Dick St.Ruth.  After the speeches everyone made their way out into the sunshine and to our greens for the traditional rolling of the jack that signalled the start of another season.

Shirley awarded Casey Volunteer Award
Shirley Venville receiving award from City of Casey Mayor Cr Shar Balmes
We are very proud of our lady president, Shirley Venville, whose tireless volunteer work was recognised by the City of Casey earlier this month.

The award recognises and honours those individuals who have contributed to the development of the Casey community, or have had a positive impact on the quality of life of City of Casey residents through their selfless volunteering efforts.

Well done Shirley!

Please attend this meeting to hear how your club fared financially, who will be on the Board of Management, and Section Selection Committee next season and have a say in setting our fees for next year. As you probably know, this will be the inaugural club structure under our new constitution.

Special Effort Raffle Results
Our raffle to assist with the cost of upgrading our clubhouse was drawn on Sunday, 10th April and the prize winners were:
  • 1st Prize WATER TANK to Ian Faulkner (No.1318)

Tuesday Pennant Gand Final Win!
Tuesday 22nd March
After fighting their way through to the grand final, both sides played well in a very tight contest on the excellent greens at Burwood District Bowling Club. Our 2nd side had an exciting win against Williamstown, winning the club's first Divisional Flag in many years. The team were presented with medallions from Bowls Vic as a momento of their achievement. Well done to Gerry and the girls.
Unfortunately our 4th side were unable to overcome the quality bowling of Monbulk's only Tuesday pennant side and despite some brilliant bowling, lost by 7 shots.
Results:
Our Division 3 side beat Williamstown 75 to 61
Our Division 5 side lost to Monbulk 56 to 63
Congratulations to both sides for doing our club proud!

Thursday 17th March
After their strong win on Tuesday both teams travelled to Glen Waverley where they once again demolished their opponents on the fast greens.
Results:
Our Division 3 side beat Carrum 86 to 74
Our Division 5 side beat Kew Heights 75 to 69

Tuesday 15th March
Cranny won two of their sections in the Tuesday Metro Pennant and will be promoted to higher Divisions next season.

Both sides had comfortable wins in the first round of the Divisional finals at Keysborough. Both sides now play off in the next round of finals at Glen Waverley where our 2nd side will play Carrum, and our 4th side play Kew Heights.

Our 2nd side, (Division 3), played against a determined Darebin City side and despite a wobbly start, played some awesome bowls to recover and win well on all 3 rinks.

Cheryl Wright's rink of Joyce Pearce (3), Margaret Morrow (2) and Thelma Lennon (lead) played superbly to win the coveted "Best Rink" award.
"Winners are Grinners"
Joyce, Thelma, Margaret & Cheryl
Shirley, Gerry, Pat & Bernice

Isabel, Jan, Kath & Eileen

Our 4th side (Division 5) played against an in-form Montmorency and battled all day to maintain a slim lead. Vocal support from their many supporters and some excellent draw bowling saw the Cranny team prevail and wins were achieved on all 3 rinks also.
Well done to all players, managers, and of course, to our selectors!

Ladies State Fours finalists

Congratulations to our ladies who recently qualified to play in the State Fours final. The gun team of Barb Gribbin (skip), Lyn Whalley (3), Leslie Mulder (2) and Barbara Fulton (lead) outplayed teams from Berwick, Narre Warren and Dandy Rec. to reach the State 4s final. Our ladies put on a display of quality bowling on the day, including a big conversion of 5 down to 6 up by Barb on the first end against Narre Warren, to play off in the finals at Kialla in the 17th April. Good luck girls!

Saturday Pennant Finals
Cranny had 4 out of 6 sides playing finals in the Saturday pennant comp this year. Well done to our boys and girls for doing so well, you did the club proud! Our selectors deserve congratulations for getting such a good result too...we all know it isn't an easy or popular job, particularly in a year with so many new faces.

Our 2nd side (Division 2) were beaten in Round 1 of the post Sectional games, losing to Ferntree Gully's top side on their lightning quick synthetic green.

Our 6th side (Division 7) were also beaten in Round 1, losing to Sandringham (3) on their home green.

In Round 1 our 4th side (Division 4) had a convincing win over Burden Park (3) at home on Saturday, but lost in the Sectional final to Keysborough on Sunday.

Our 5th side (Division 6) won their Section with a narrow win of 2 shots over Burwood District (4) at home on Saturday and then beat Mt Waverley on Sunday. They travelled to Donvale the following week to play Lalor (6) on day 1 of the Divisional finals. It was a very close thing, but unfortunately our team could'nt keep their momentum over the last few ends and fell away.
Great to see so many members supporting our team at Donvale!

Skills Clinic held eachFriday afternoon
Our Senior Coach, Brian Gay, is holding skills clinics on A Green each Friday afternoon. A great opportunity  for members to improve their bowls at no cost. Contact Brian for details.

Honour for Allan Dennis - At the Casey Citizens of the Year Awards 2011, Allan was honored for his significant role in the Casey Community over many years. He is a charter member of the Lions Club of Cranbourne, a life member of the Cranbourne Cricket Club and, of course, a life member of our own Club. In her message, the Mayor of the City of Casey, Cr. Shar Balmes told all nominees that they are the heart and backbone of the community, helping to make Casey a great place to live and inspiring us all.
Congratulations, Allan, from all of us.

Please note that our  Top Green (B) is to be scarified after pennant is over later in February. Weather permitting, the green will again be ready for bowling by mid March.

Video Camera – New Coaching Aid: Towards the end of 2010 the City of Casey invited applications within the Operational / Minor Grants Program. Our Club successfully applied for funds to purchase a video camera as a coaching aid for our Club coaches. The camera is now with Senior Coach Brian Gay. Data from the camera is stored on a memory card and can be displayed on the big TV screen.

Photocopying and Faxing in the Club conference room. These facilities are for the use of Club Committees and are operated and maintained with club funds. Unfortunately, some members seem to use these facilities for private purposes without authorization. It would be appreciated if these members were to refrain from misusing Club facilities.

Sun Hats – Last year, the State Government Department of Community Development invited applications for sporting uniform grants. Our Club was successful with an application for sun hats. These white ‘bucket’ type hats with wide brim were ordered before Christmas but receipt is not expected before mid February due to the holiday season. The Board of Management requested that the quantity of hats (around 45 of them) be passed on to the Ladies’ and Men’s Section Presidents as well as the organizers of the Twilight Bowlers for fair distribution.

Special General Meeting:  On Saturday February 19th, 10am, the Unification Committee will submit their recommended, new Constitution to members for adoption. The Committee consists of 2 members from the Men’s Section, Wal Ballard and Matt Boltong, 2 members of the Ladies’s Section, Shirley Venville and Leslie Mulder, 2 members of the Board, Peter Elgar and Fritz Helle, plus Chairman Hans Worsteling. Notices of the meeting have been posted and handed to members. A Notice is pinned on the Notice Board together with an explanation for the amendments and two hard copies. If you would like a hard copy or an electronic copy, please contact a member of the Unification Committee. Please do not leave any questions you have until the day of the Special General Meeting – ask now.

Vale – Len Patterson:  It is with immense sadness that we report the passing of Len Patterson. Len was a regular helper in our Club and assisted as Secretary of the Men’s Section for many years. We shall miss Len.

                            Edition 5                                    December 2010

Dear Club Member,

City of Casey All Abilities Sports Carnival, Thursday 2nd December 2010 at Casey Fields – Basketball, Tennis, Cricket and Lawn Bowls. Bus loads of participants came from various areas of Frankston, Dandenong and Stonington.
The Cranbourne Bowling Club represented our chosen sport. Close to 10 members in uniform were there to assist the many interested youngsters and show them the finer points of the sport. Just as the Carnival was to be officially opened, down came the heavy rain and the carnival had to be abandoned.
It was a shame. A lot of effort had gone into organizing the event and the many participants had been looking forward to it for many months. Hopefully the sun will shine next time.
Chairman Hans Worsteling would like to express his gratitude to all Cranbourne members that were there and offered to help. Also a big ‘thank you’ to Blue Hills Bowling Club members who offered their assistance.

Update on Club Renovations – The building permit has been issued. With the peak holiday season for the end of December / January and busy February as far as the Club is concerned, it now looks like the end of February or beginning of March 11. The works will take 3 weeks. In the meantime we have a bit of re-arranging and organizing to do.

Advance Notice of Special General Meeting – At the Board of Management meeting on December 20th 2010 it was decided to submit the updated and amended constitution to members for approval on Saturday 20th February at 10am. Members will receive further notification about the meeting and details of the proposed constitution as we get a bit closer to that date.

Insurance is a big item in the cost structure of all clubs. Our comprehensive insurance cover for 2010 amounted to over $3,000. To renew cover from the same Broker for 2011 was quoted at close to $5,000! The Club then invited a quote from another reputable insurer. By making some small alterations to the policy, we were able to save around $1,500.
The insurance package covers LIABILITY insurance (public, legal, products and property), PROPERTY Insurance (greens, stock etc.), ASSOCIATION liability insurance and PERSONAL ACCIDENT Insurance.

Insurance should be looked at as a safety net. Our Club should not go under if something horrible and unforeseen were to happen. Despite this, every club and its members have a Duty of Care.
Pick up broken glass before somebody gets hurt, pick up fallen objects before somebody stumbles over them and wipe spilled drinks before somebody slips. Stop bowling when the greens and surroundings get wet and slippery or thunder and lightning are overhead. Do not leave valuables lying around as if they are meant to be carried away. Members should not invite problems by being careless but should go out of their way to prevent potential accidents.

Dear Club Member,

Assisting Posts for Synthetic Green:
From time to time there are requests for assisting posts around our synthetic green. You will be pleased to hear that such posts will be installed during the course of November, i.e. November 2010. The club approached the All Abilities Section of the City of Casey to assist. We have been advised that the City of Casey will not only arrange for the purchase and installation of these posts but also pay for it all. Thank you.

Body Coolers for our Senior Players:
In May this year the Leader Newspaper featured a Community Grassroots Gold Promotion in conjunction with REBEL SPORTS, RACV, SHOW YOUR CARD & SAVE.
The Cranbourne Bowling Club entered the competition and won the grant for our senior sportsmen and sportswomen. The funds were to be spent with the sporting goods retailer, Rebel Sports. To allow as many bowlers of our club to benefit from this grant, the Board of Management of the Club decided to provide approx. 35 Personal Body Coolers to our elderly bowling ladies and around the same number to our elderly men bowlers.
The Body Coolers will greatly assist Cranbourne Bowlers to keep their cool on hot days during the forthcoming summer. The Club is very appreciative of the assistance provided by the Leader Community Grassroots Gold Promotion.

We are a Community Club:
Our members come from a wide spectrum of the Cranbourne area community. We welcome young and more senior persons, male and female and persons of all abilities. We are an all inclusive Community Club. Our facilities are set in beautiful, relaxing surroundings. They have been maintained by volunteer members over two generations. We are grateful to all these volunteers and we can be proud of OUR CLUB.
As an outward looking community club we attract grants and assistance from all levels of government for the benefit of our members and the community in general.
Our members will always have priority but if the community has an occasional requirement, locality for a function for example, that can be filled by our Club then we have an obligation to respond positively.

Friday afternoon Happy Hour Jackpot:
The jackpot has reached $ 340 per 28th October. You have to be there to win it.

"Cool" bowlers at Cranny
Thanks to the Leader Newspaper's Community Grassroots Gold promotion, our club won a grant for our senior members. The grant was sponsored by Rebel Sports who provided personal body coolers for a number of our more senior members. These coolers will help our bowlers keep their cool on the greens during the long, hot days of summer. Well done to our ever vigilant Fritz for his hard work in obtaining this grant for our club.

Modelling their new personal body coolers are Margaret, Mia & Betty.

Special Edition        September / October  2010

Broadband Kiosk

The latest news on our “Broadband for Seniors” grant is that we are taking delivery of the computer furniture, (2 desks & 3 chairs), this week. We expect to get the 2 computers and broadband access early next month. This means that this facility should be available to our members in a few weeks at the latest. The kiosk is in our Meeting Room and can accommodate 2 users at a time.

Peter Elgar and Alex Woodman will be holding workshops over October, November and December to teach computer basics such as:

  •        Turning on and shutting down a computer

  •         Using the keyboard and mouse

  •         How to set up your own email account

  •         How to send and receive emails to\from family and friends

  •         How to access and browse the internet

  •         How to navigate to,  and view  our own club website

  •        Writing a letter on the computer

Workshops will be kept to groups of 6 people and will run for about an hour at a time. A list will be posted on our Notice Board for people interested in attending so they can put their names down.

Our tutors will assume that you know nothing at all about computers, email or the internet. The whole idea is to learn computer stuff in a friendly and familiar setting, so please don’t be shy or intimidated…once you have learned the basics it will open up a whole new world to you!

When fully operational, the broadband kiosk will be open for any of our members to use; further details will be provided then.

What is happening with the Clubhouse renovations?

Has Hans lost his magic wand to get things done on the double? Well, all required permits are being applied for and they cannot be rushed otherwise they take longer. It will all happen.

The Good Guys Cranbourne – Cash promotion

Frank Butera is a very valuable sponsor of our Club. When you visit Frank and his team, please do not hesitate to mention that you are a member of the Cranbourne Bowling Club. He will look after you with a good price. In addition, he will make one dollar available to our Club for every 25 dollars you spend in that shop (4%). If you purchase a Coffee Machine for $ 139 for example, Frank will set aside $ 5 for our Club.

News from Bowls Victoria

Wearing of different Club Shirts: In their circular MSC 076/10 dated 14th September, Bowls Victoria confirmed that for the next two (2) seasons (2010/11 and 2011/12) club shirts currently registered with Bowls Victoria (either with RVBA or VLBA) may, at the discretion of the Club, be worn in the same Pennant sides.
From season 2012/13 onwards, pennant sides have to wear a registered shirt of the same design.

Hot of the Press !!!!! - Broadband for Seniors

Peter Elgar advised that he received definite confirmation from NEC Australia Pty.Ltd. that our Club has been chosen to receive a Broadband for Seniors Kiosk. Further details with our cranny bulletin, edition 4, due early in October.

Edition 2 - August/September 2010

Dear Club Member,

Changes for Pennant Season 10/11: During the course of winter the rumor had it that "giving away the mat" would no longer be allowed and that the minimum length would be brought back to 21m. According to Bowls Victoria, these matters will be discussed by World Bowls during the Commonwealth Games in India and a decision is due at the end of September.

Notices

Vale - Dot Harris

Sadly, we have to report the passing of Dot Harris in August. Dot finally succumbed after a long battle with cancer. She was a valuable and highly respected member of our Club for many years.

Vale - Peter Russell

It is with immense sadness that we report the passing of Peter Russell. During his long membership with our Club, Peter was a regular helper and cheered up many of us with his big smile.

Artificial Arms for Bowlers

Rules and Clarifications to rules for the use of bowlers arms plus special application forms have been issued by Bowls Victoria in July and August. If you are using a bowlers arm or are thinking of using such a gadget, please ask your Section Secretary for a copy of these circulars.

Computer Kiosk

We have recently applied for a grant to host a "Broadband for Seniors Kiosk" which is a government initiative to help seniors gain confidence in using computer technology and to use the internet. If successful the club will receive 2 new NEC computer systems, computer furniture, a wireless modem and free access to the internet. In return, the club must be able to provide the facilities to accommodate the kiosk and 2 volunteer tutors. Peter Elgar and Alex Woodman have agreed to be our tutors if we receive the grant. The computers and internet access will be available to members from 12.00 pm to 4.00 pm Monday through Saturday. Peter and Alex will teach you how to use a computer, set up a free email account & send emails to family & friends, browse the internet & view our own website, use WordPad, (word processing software), and play computer solitaire. At this stage our application has progressed to Stage 2 so keep your fingers crossed that we are successful! We expect to know if we get the grant before the end of September.

Edition 1 - August 2010

Dear Club Member

Welcome to the first crannybowls newsletter. The aim is to let you know what the different club management levels have been doing, what they intend to do and how this will affect you. This will make the Club more open and more accessible to input and scrutiny. The newsletter also provides up to date general information. Better informed members are happier members.

Alterations to the Clubhouse

On Friday evening, July 30th , Cr. Amanda Stapledon advised members of a minor grants allocation of $ 24,420 by the Casey Council for preliminary work. This includes the replacement of two archways by a steel beam, moving and replacing windows and doors on the side towards the ‘B’ (top) green. This will allow the bar and cool room area to be shifted forward to make way for new, more pleasant toilet facilities. It is expected that the preliminary work (stage 1) will be finished early in 2011. In 2011 the Club will hopefully receive a further Capital Works Grant from the Casey Council to finish the amenities area (stage 2).

Looking ahead

Did you know that the Board of Management created a Synthetic Green Replacement Fund earlier this calendar year with an initial input of $ 51,000? The Treasurer is expected to add further $ 10,000 every year over the next 4 to 5 years. By then it will be time to replace the surface of that green. The Fund currently stands at $ 62,000.

Club Unification Sub-Committee

This Sub-Committee now has met for the second time and the rough outline of the Constitution to be presented to the members next year is clearer. It will require a lot more meetings to determine the finer points.

Bowls Victoria Update

Circular MSC055/10 advises that pre-pennant practice will revert to the rules in place prior to the 09/10 season. This means that pennant practice is only allowed on the rinks other than those allocated for the match.

Opening Day for Season 2010/11

The Opening Day is on Sunday August 28th. Hope to see you there. Please do not forget to add your name to the attendance list in the clubhouse.

Almost a clean sweep!

Peter Colthup & his teams, win the Club Pairs, Club Triples & Club Fours!

A fantastic effort from our developing Division 1 skipper, Peter Colthup, who nearly achieved a clean sweep of the 2010 Mens championship events when he skipped his way to victory in our club pairs, triples & fours. He was well supported by his teams of Robbie (Red Bowls) Reid, (in the Pairs,Triples & Fours), Ian (Ruger) Barrenger (in the Triples & Fours) and Ron (Pockets) Plunkett (in the Fours). Peter was delighted by the result, and said that adding the club singles to his trophy cabinet was his objective next year.
